Letter from the Director

by Carl R. DeMilia, Director

If you don't like the weather....we all have heard that old saying and New England is famous for the variety of weather in short periods of time. This fall has been no exception. Two totally different types of storms only two months apart had pretty much the same effect on most of us - loss of electrical power. In August, Tropical Storm Irene knocked out power for many in our area and state. An unusual early snow storm in late October wreaked even more havoc Full Story

Let's Plan on a Good Winter!

by Sally Tornow, Public Services Librarian

Just as winter starts getting us down and the end of holidays blues hits us, the Library and the FRIENDS of NMPL come to the rescue with the Adult Winter Reading program from January 9th through March 9th. NMPL-An Oasis of Escape will have the usual set up: receive a small gift just for signing up and receive a raffle ticket for each item you read that gives you the opportunity to win one of three prizes at the end of the program, provided by our wonderful FRIENDS. First prize will be a gift certificate to Executive Cuisine, second prize is a picnic basket, and third prize is a picnic blanket - all of which you can use to create your own oasis of escape. E-books Are Coming, E-books Are Coming! blio logo

by Sally Tornow, Public Services Librarian

You have all been so patient as we investigated the best possible service to offer our wonderful patrons. With e-books themselves and the method by which they are delivered all in such a state of flux, we wanted to be as ahead in our thinking as possible. Our feeling is that e-books are here to stay, but will co-exist for a long time with print books. However, they may continue to be read on e-book readers like Nooks and Kindles, or those readers may disappear and everyone will use some form of a tablet...or something we don't even know about yet! In addition, publishers haven't  Full Story

Homework Help on the Web

by Sue Ford, Head of the Children's Services

Did you know that the NMPL's website has a great section of links to some very helpful sites for homework assistance? If you go to our site at: http://www.newmilfordlibrary.org, then scroll down to "Children's Programs" and then to "Homework Help", you can get at the links. These can be helpful to use when you can't get out to the library or you need some help understanding some of the topics that your kids are studying. And, of course, don't forget TumbleBooks for reading and foreign language fun. You can access TumbleBooks under "Children's Programs" on our site.

Remember to be careful when using the internet for reference and information for your children. Using sites and databases that are on NMPL's website can help you to be sure that the sites are safe and informative. If you need help navigating our site, call us at 860-355-1191, ext. 204 for more information on how to find what you are looking for!

Where Have All the Reference Books Gone?
by Margaret Kistinger, Reference/Information Services Librarian

Many library patrons have noticed a few changes in the Reference area over the past several weeks, prompting the question, "Where have all the Reference books gone?" The answer may surprise you!

In early October the library's new Laptop Station welcomed its first users. The area formerly used to display Reference Materials now contains seven individual stations, complete with comfortable seating and electrical outlets to plug in electronics. Laptop users may work quietly and remain undisturbed, with no worries over where to plug in, or over crowded tables. Users may connect to our wi-fi with their library card, so if you never got around to getting your library card, now is the perfect time! Out of town guests may ask for a wi-fi pass at the Reference Desk.

So... where have all the Reference books gone? No worries, these books were simply shifted down several feet and are now closer to the circulating collection!

October Snowstorm

by Margaret Kistinger, Reference/Information Services Librarian

No heat. No electricity. No Internet! What's a person to do? Why, hunker down at the library, of course! This was exactly what happened at NMPL during the days (OK, week) following the bizarre October snowstorm that left many residents feeling stranded and severed from much needed information and outside contact. The library swelled with users needing information on shelter, shower facilities, clean sources of water, school delays and openings. That the library provided a place to warm up for a while and seek others in similar circumstances was an added bonus.

Computer stations were constantly in use, with many people reading newspapers and magazines while waiting for their turn. The library's new laptop stations (see related article) were full from morning to closing, with additional users spilling over on to tables. Cell phones were charged, business was conducted and family members were reached. The out-pouring of gratitude from library users was almost overwhelming and the words, "I love this library," continued to echo.
