Letter from the Director

by Mark P. Hasskarl, Director

As I settle into my new position as the new director of the New Milford Public Library, I thought I'd take this opportunity to introduce myself.

At this point in my life, I have been a public library director for just over 35 years. I originally moved to Connecticut from upstate New York (and lived on Pickett District Road) in November 1976, with my still-new Master's of Library Science degree in hand, to become the director of the Brookfield Library. In August 1984 I started as the director of the Chappaqua Library in Westchester County, NY, a position I held for 22 years.  Read more

Expanded Hours and Staff

by Mark P. Hasskarl, Director

Good things come to those who wait is a maxim that will soon be true for library patrons and members of the community. A 2012 Library Community Survey showed demand for increased library hours and for instruction in the use of technology and software. More recently, in January of this year, the library asked residents to voice their opinion on our Sunday hours, which had to be cut beginning last fall. Each and every one of the 149 responses was in favor of resuming Sunday hours. The great news is that as of October 5, the library will reopen on Sundays between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m. through the day before Memorial Day weekend, 2015. Read more

It's a Screwball Summer
by Sally Tornow, Public Services Librarian

NMPL focuses on the children for the summer, but that doesn't mean we are leaving out the adults entirely! We will continue to offer our regular programs, plus some individual offerings that should tweak your interest.

The Monday Movies foreign film series will continue through the summer and early fall with one from France (The Jewish Cardinal), one from Germany (Beyond Silence) and one from Lebanon (Where Do We Go Now?). Maybe traveling isn't in the cards for you this summer, but at least you can go via the movies! They will be screened the second Monday of the month at 1:00 PM.  Read more

Special Summer Programs for Kids
by Sue Ford, Children's Services Librarian

In addition to the Reading Program, we have lots of other fun activities for children from June through August. Some of the programs are weekly and others are special one time only. Registration for these programs starts at 10:00 AM on June 16. All of these programs are very popular, so register early so you don't get blocked out of your favorites. Check here for all the details.

Special Reel Movie Series
by Mark P. Hasskarl, Director

When I was hired as the director of the Danbury Library, the News-Times headline read something like "Library Hires Movie Buff as New Director" (which prompted a very angry and nasty letter to the editor which accused me of throwing out books to make room for more DVDs from, ironically, a New Milford weekend resident). I am, indeed, a movie buff; but as far as the New Milford Public Library goes, I am a librarian first. So as a library director who's offered monthly movie programs in my three previous libraries, I'm happy to announce that I'll be starting a new film series here in September. Called "Reel Justice: Great Courtroom Dramas," the series will feature ten of the best courtroom drama movies from the 1950s through the 1980s. Read more

New Technologies for Patrons
by Peggy Ganong, Library Technology Coordinator

As we are continually searching for ways to help our patrons to be more empowered, we are very excited to announce 2 upcoming new technologies which we believe will be both useful and helpful to you.

The first is an enhanced calendar software program which is more powerful and affords more functionality for highlighting our many children's, teens and adult programs. You will find a sleeker look, more powerful viewing and searching and easier registration (when required).

The second technology upgrade is called the MobilePrint Service. With Mobile Print, if you have a laptop, tablet, phone or home PC, you will be able to submit print jobs from those devices both from inside and outside the library. Then come to the library and use our Print Management system to print these jobs!

We expect these 2 new technologies to be available soon after July 1, 2014 when our new expanded hours go into effect! (see the article in this newsletter) So stay tuned and we will keep you informed!!

Well that is our summer lineup in a nutshell. We hope that we have sparked your interest and intrigued you to investigate some of the goodies we have lined up. Enjoy your summer and see you at the library for some fun!

Sincerely,
