Letter from the Director
by Sally Tornow, Library Director

The State must have taken notice of the 70% yea vs. 30% nay voting results in support for the Library renovation that New Milford showed in the referendum in November. Last summer, we applied for a building grant from the State for the maximum amount they offer ($1,000,000) and we were approved! To adhere to the guidelines of the grant will take a bit of time, so we cannot really offer a starting date for construction, but the project has to go out to bid and the Library itself needs to prepare for the MUCH smaller space we will have for the duration.

We are planning to condense our entire collection to a bare bones size that will fit into the 1898 building, with the rest of it going into storage for the construction period. We will continue to offer internet access and some work space, but on a much reduced level. We will also continue to offer programs, both for Children and Adults, but much of it will be off-site. The various groups that meet at the Library will have access to a meeting space, but, of course, that, too, will be limited. As anyone who has built or renovated their home, the duration is agony, but well worth it when done. We know that will be the case for the Library, as well. As we develop interim plans, we’ll keep you informed.

The entire staff, Board of Trustees, and Friends of NMPL wish all of you a wonderful, peaceful, and happy holiday season!

We Hate Saying Goodbye

Sherry Chaillou, Children’s Associate, has been a familiar face for ten years in the Children’s Department, but she has decided to spend more time in her garden and attend to her reading – a well-deserved relaxation! As co-worker Amy Berkun wrote a few years ago, “Sherry and her husband, Bruce, came to Connecticut from Rockland County, NY, to open Chaillou Flower Shop. They worked hard at it for many years, until finally deciding to try something different, and so they closed their shop. To this day, they both love flowers and gardening; their backyard is a testament to both. She also loves to color and is happy that others have also found coloring to be relaxing. Sherry started at the Library as a library volunteer. Then, in 2008, she started working part-time in the Children’s Room where she has made many reading friendships with the children and their parents. She takes pleasure in showing the children how the library works and where to find the latest popular series.” We will not be the only ones who miss her! Her last day is December 12, so make sure you stop in to say goodbye.
